Scope of document
1.1. This guide has been developed for specialists of the professional construction community in order to improve
thequality of design and installation of waterproofi ng systems with the application of TECHNONICOL waterstops.
1.2. The provisions of this guide should be taken into account when developing sections of project documentation
regarding waterproofi ng, technological regulations, work plans and technological fl ow charts regulating works
onwaterproofi ng building structures with the application of TECHNONICOL waterstops.
1.3. This guide is recommended for use by employees of specialized design and construction organizations involved
in the design and installation of foundation waterproofi ng systems at industrial and civil construction sites.
1.4. The regulations can also be applied by construction organizations performing concrete works in the construction
of underground and embedded structures.
1.5. The guide contains information on TECHNONICOL waterstops applied for waterproofi ng of technological
anddeformation joints in structures of foundations, as well as underground and embedded structures.
1.6. The guide presents selection methods and criteria for the use of waterstops, as well as information on
the principles of designing joint protection using waterstops, rules for their installation, fastening and mounting,
andmethods for quality control of works performed.
1.7. This guide shall not be used instead of project or regulatory documents. When designing waterproofi ng systems
and installing waterproofi ng coverings, the requirements of national and territorial regulations on design of insulating
coatings and safety precautions in construction, as well as current regulations on occupational health and fi re safety
inconstruction, must be observed.
1.8. The illustrations presented in this guide are schematic and may diff er from the actual appearance.

Classification and types of waterstops,
their markings and scope of application
3.1. TECHNONICOL waterproofi ng dowels (waterstops) are profi led tapes made of plasticized PVC or thermoplastic
polyolefi nes (TPO) by extrusion.
3.2. Waterstops are used to protect technological (cold) and deformation joints from the penetration of dampness,
moisture, as well as water under pressure and without it in reinforced concrete structures of underground, embedded
parts of buildings and structures under the infl uence of surface andground waters.
3.3. According to their location in a mass concrete, waterstops are divided into internal (double-sided, central) and
external (one-sided, lateral) ones. Internal waterstops are located in the center of mass concrete and attached tothe
reinforcement, and external waterstops are located on the side of mass concrete and attached to the formwork
orPVC/TPO membrane.
3.4. According to the area of application, waterstops are divided into dowels for sealing cold joints and dowels for
sealing deformation joints, as well as dowels that are used for zoning (sectioning) of repairable waterproofi ng made
ofPVC and TPO membranes.
3.5. The nomenclature, geometric dimensions, physical and mechanical characteristics and functional zones
ofwaterstops are presented in Appendix 1.
3.6. The markings and scope of application of waterstops are presented in Table 1.

3.7. Names of brands for waterstops are formed by sequentially entering alphabetic and numerical indices indicating:
— location in a mass concrete (E – External; I – Internal; F – Finish – fi nishing arrangement, one part of the
product is placed in a concrete structure, and the other part acts as the fi nishing element of the seam;
R – Renovation – one part of the product is mechanically fi xed to the existing structure, and the other part
isembedded in concrete of the structure being newly erected);
— joint type (С – Cold joint; M – Movement (deformation) joint);
— polymer feature (SP – Swelling polymer);
— waterstop width;
— deformation assembly width;
— quantity of sealing ribs.
The numerical index indicating the width of the deformation assembly is separated from the numerical index indicating
the width of the waterstop by the sign “/”, and the numerical index indicating the number of sealing ribs is separated by
the sign “–”.
How to read conventional signs in the names of waterstops:

3.8. In waterproofi ng systems, in addition to waterstops, products that perform the functions of waterstops are also
used to seal technological and deformation joints. Information about these products is included in the appropriate
sections of this guide to improve the use of the products. The list of such products is presented in Table 2.
